GHG Training Validation and Verification
GHG validation and verification are essential because greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are considered a primary driver of climate change. To reduce emissions and meet international commitments regarding climate change, companies and organizations must implement strategies to measure and report their emissions. Validation and verification help ensure that the resulting emissions data is accurate and reliable, while also meeting regulatory requirements and international standards. Validation focuses on evaluating the GHG monitoring plan, testing the suitability of the methodologies, assumptions, and boundaries used prior to the collection of emissions data (*ex-ante*). It is an initial process conducted to check the conformity and completeness of the data and GHG emissions calculation methodologies against applicable standards. This stage serves as an internal check to ensure the resulting data is accurate and defensible. The verification process can only begin once validation is complete. Validation examines:
  1. Methodological suitability: Are the methods chosen to calculate GHG emissions appropriate and aligned with standards such as ISO 14064?
  2. Validity of assumptions: Are the assumptions used in the GHG emissions calculations realistic and justifiable?
  3. Clarity of boundaries: Have clear boundaries—such as organizational and operational boundaries—been established for the GHG emissions calculations?
Verification is an independent confirmation process conducted by an accredited third party. It takes place after GHG emissions data has been collected and reported (*ex-post*). Its purpose is to ensure the objectivity and validity of the previously validated GHG emissions data. The outcome of this verification is an official statement confirming that the reported GHG emissions data complies with established standards and requirements. The verification will assess:
  1. Accuracy: Have the reported emission data been calculated correctly and are they free from errors?
  2. Completeness: Have all relevant GHG emission sources been accounted for and reported?
  3. Consistency: Are the reported emission data consistent over time and across units/divisions?
  4. Transparency: Are the reported emission data presented clearly and in an understandable manner?
  5. Freedom from material misstatement: Are the reported emission data free from significant errors that could mislead data users?
  1. Accountability and Transparency: GHG validation and verification ensure that emission data reported by countries or organizations is accurate and trustworthy. This is crucial for gaining the confidence of various stakeholders—from governments and investors to the general public—regarding an organization’s commitment to managing its emissions and fulfilling obligations under NDCs and the Paris Agreement.
  2. Basis for Data-Driven Decision-Making: Credible data acts as a compass, guiding governments and/or organizations in formulating climate policies and helping companies devise effective emission reduction strategies.
  3. Compliance with Applicable Regulations: In Indonesia and many other countries, GHG emission reporting is mandated by law. Validation and verification assist organizations in meeting these obligations.
  4. Access to Green Financing: Financial institutions and investors are increasingly scrutinizing environmental performance, including how organizations manage their GHG emissions. Verified data can open doors to sustainable financing opportunities.
  5. Participation in Carbon Markets: Verified emission data is a prerequisite for engaging in carbon trading or other incentive schemes.
  6. Measuring Progress: Through the verification process, organizations can assess whether they are meeting the emission reduction targets outlined in their NDCs and contributing to the broader goals of the Paris Agreement.
ISO 14064-3 is an international standard that provides guidance and requirements for the validation and verification of greenhouse gas (GHG) assertions. This standard is the third part of the ISO 14064 series, which collectively addresses the quantification, monitoring, reporting, validation, and verification of GHG emissions and removals. By attending this training, you will understand the fundamental principles of ISO 14064-3, including:
  1. Relevance: Ensuring GHG information is relevant to user needs.
  2. Completeness: Accurately reporting all GHG sources and removals.
  3. Consistency: Enabling meaningful comparisons of emission data over time.
  4. Accuracy: Minimizing bias and uncertainty as much as possible.
  5. Transparency: Disclosing sufficient GHG information to enable users to make decisions with confidence.
